The major film studios return to the Venice Film Festival between September 1 and 11 in a clear sign of change, which had already been appreciated at Cannes. The official section will host established names such as Pablo Larraín, Pedro Almodóvar, Paolo Sorrentino, Paul Schrader or Jane Campion; A jury chaired by the Korean Bong Joon-ho, director of the Oscar-winning ‘Parasites’, will decide with whom of them the long-awaited Golden Lion will end up.
Only in the Official Selection there are three films produced by Universal: ‘Last Night in Soho’ and ‘Halloween Kills’ (both out of competition) and ‘The Card Counter’.
Then, it will see Warner’s ‘artillery’ with ‘Dune’ and a Fox-Disney film, ‘Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon’, by Ana Lily Amirpour. Added to this is the western ‘Old Henry’, by Potsy Ponciroli. Not to mention that Netflix will present three films in competition: ‘Spencer’, about Princess Diana; Paolo Sorrentino’s film ‘La mano di Dio’; and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut ‘The Lost Daughter’.
The stars will also return. This is the case of Jamie Lee Curtis, star of David Gordon Green’s ‘Halloween Kills’, who will receive the Golden Lion for the Run. Also arriving are Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe, actors from ‘The Card Counter’, by Paul Schrader. Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ will feature all its stars: Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac Zendaya, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem. For ‘Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon’ will be Jeon Jong-seo, Kate Hudson and, Craig Robinson.
High Latin American representation
Venezuelan director Lorenzo Vigas will return to the Lido of Venice with ‘La Caja’. Chilean Pablo Larraín will compete with ‘Spencer’, a film starring Kristen Stewart in the role of Lady Di.
Argentina will be represented by the film ‘Official Competition’, by the directors Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat.
Meanwhile, the Mexican Michel Franco will present his film ‘Sundown’, with Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg, a year after winning the Silver Lion for his controversial film ‘New Order’.
The four films are among the 21 that will participate in the official competition.
