students will meet with Minister Holder

The Federation of Moncton University Campus Students (FÉÉCUM) will meet with the Minister of Education to discuss the scrapping of the Connect NB-AE program.

This program, whose cancellation was announced by the government of Blaine Higgs a little over a week ago, allowed students to receive employment insurance benefits while studying.

FÉÉCUMM President Jean-Sébastien Léger and University of New Brunswick Student Union President Kordell Walsh will meet with Post-Secondary Education Minister Trevor Holder at a meeting scheduled for July 12.

In a press release, Mr. Léger said he hoped that the minister would commit to finding a solution to the crisis caused by the elimination of Connexion NB-AE.

“We find ourselves in a situation where a lot of student people, who thought they were going back to school in September, will simply not be able to afford it. They will have to choose between food, accommodation, or continuing their studies. The department must put forward concrete measures to compensate for the monetary losses incurred following its cancellation of the Connexion NB-AE program,” declared the president of the FÉÉCUM.

Last year, nearly 7,000 New Brunswick students benefited from the Connect NB-AE program, created in 2016.
