Next academic year, students of Ghent University will partly follow lessons in the Ghelamco Arena and Flanders Expo. Negotiations on this were concluded on Thursday.

Taking lessons at Ghent University will look completely different next academic year. Students will not only take classes on campus, but also in notable locations such as the Ghelamco Arena. In the football stadium, so-called study-oo‘s furnished, permanent places where students can study together, carry out assignments and follow online lessons. In total, some sixty are being set up for 20 to 50 students each, mainly from the first year and from courses with few practicals.

Due to the corona crisis, Ghent University is forced to expand the number of teaching locations. Additional study places and two large classrooms for 400 people are also being set up in Flanders Expo. Negotiations on this were concluded on Thursday. Students are also accommodated in the Urbis complex on the South and the UGent complex Rommelaere on the Bijloke. A total of 3,000 additional study places will be set up.

The freshmen will take three to four half days in one study-oo right, ”says Rector Rik Van de Walle. “Combined with the lessons on campus they will interact regularly with each other and with the teachers. They can be in the study-oo’s online and on campus combine education. In this way we promote mutual social contact and interaction. ”

Studentenrestaurants

The university’s student homes will open, but under additional conditions. A number of rooms are reserved for students who have to be quarantined. The student restaurants remain largely closed. They will provide take-away meals “to serve as many students as possible”. But eating spaghetti on the spot is not possible, not even in the popular student restaurant De Brug.
