Students Take Action for the Planet: Jean Vigo High School’s Initiative

Thursday, April 6, the eco-delegates of the Jean Vigo high school with their referents, Mrs. Boucher and Mrs. Rigal, organized a day for the planet. The day started with a waste collection from the Puits-de-Calès gymnasium, accompanied by PE teachers, Mrs. Creyssels and Mr. Rolland.

The students followed different routes in the town of Millau, towards the Tarn and the hospital. In total, a hundred students picked up around 160 kg of waste in one morning. This collection will have enabled students to be made aware of the litter that pollutes rivers and oceans. They were impressed by the amount of waste collected in such a short time. A large number of small plastics and cigarette butts were found. The pictures speak for themselves…

At the same time, in the hall of the school, the In’Vd association, the Causses compost association, the Community of Millau Grands Causses municipalities and the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park have settled. The In’Vd association presented electric bikes and offered students tests of electric vehicles. The students were able to question themselves on soft mobility. The Grands Causses Regional Nature Park offered students a quiz on global warming and the solutions that can be put in place on a daily basis to limit it. And the Community of Municipalities was able to provide information on bus timetables and the devices in place to avoid taking your car.

Since the beginning of the year, the school has had a compost in three bins which collects waste from the training restaurant, and therefore the Causses Compost association took advantage of this event to explain how to properly compost its waste. It is Mr. Solignac, at the application restaurant, who manages the filling of these compost bins. Work on waste sorting has been in place since the beginning of the year with students in the professional catering baccalaureate. Mr. Vigroux, agent at the school, also ensures the proper functioning of this compost. The Sydom Aveyron Tri Tour truck also came to the school on Thursday March 30 to explain the new sorting instructions to the students.

The eco-delegates carried out seedlings and plants upstream of this action in order to be able to organize a plant barter that day. Each staff or student could collect a plant, exchange seeds, cuttings… The participants were delighted to leave with their little plant.

The outcome of this day is rather positive, students and staff were made aware of environmental issues and they were invited to reflect on small daily actions to protect the planet.
