At the end of August, students began posting their new lesson plans online. As their posts show, the problems they faced in the previous school year are still relevant.

1. “This lesson plan is a joke”

The beginning of a new school year is a big unknown for students: this is when they receive their lesson plans, the layout of which will affect their lives in the coming months. The topic has long stirred up a lot of emotions, because the planned arrangement will affect not only the daily lives of the students themselves, but also their families.

In the previous school year, lesson plans published by disgruntled students mushroomed on the internet. Some of them included many hours of learning in one day and classes until the evening, others started classes at 6 a.m. or so-called windows, i.e. free hours between classes caused by, for example, religion classes, in which a large number of students do not participate.

This year, it seems, things are not any better. In late August and early September, many students decided to publish their lesson plans. It follows from them that the previously described problems that accompanied the youth in the previous school year are still relevant. Students complain about classes starting early, finishing late, or having too many (in their opinion) religion classes in the weekly schedule.

8th grade lesson plan during the reign of the anticlerical Mrs. @barbaraanowacka. One geography, one biology and two religions in the middle of classes, so that by any chance, the one who doesn’t go doesn’t have it too easy” – we read on the X portal (formerly Twitter).

“My school has been “ruled” by priests for years. The lesson schedule was designed to suit them. First, they told the principal which days and hours suited them, and we, the teachers, had to adjust. Retreats at school, mass in the gym, confession in class… let this finally end…” – an anonymous teacher writes on portal X.

The resentment is so great that students often do not mince their words when commenting on their new lesson plans. The main reason for dissatisfaction is having to stay at school until late hours.

This lesson plan is a joke, I finish at 3:15 PM every day, every two weeks, in the first semester, f… them for the rest” – writes an embittered student on portal X.

Another student shows a schedule according to which he must be at school by 4:35 p.m. three times a week.

2. Changes in schools

The new school year will be the first to take place entirely under the auspices of the new government after the elections in October 2023. Some of the long-announced changes in education are now coming into effect.

These include, among others, the implementation of a reduced core curriculum, standards for the protection of minors, as well as those related to religious education: the grade for religion and ethics on the school report will not be included in the average annual grade. Additionally, from September 1, 2024, all children from Ukraine living in Poland will be subject to compulsory education in a Polish school.
