19 students of Technical school for applied sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt racked their brains about how the planned Main information center 359 – called MIZ for short – should look like in Knetzgau. On Thursday they presented their seven proposals in one Virtual-Reality-Presentation in the Council and Culture Hall.

The students gave their imagination free rein for their designs for the MIZ
All participants can be attested that they let their imaginations run wild. The first group of three presented a building in the shape of a boat. A water sports offer, a flexible stage with beach chairs for the spectators and a storage area with a bathing opportunity complete the offer. A climbing garden in the shape of a ship is intended to attract the younger clientele, who can then use the “Flying-Fox” to fly back from the Main island across the Main to the MIZ using a steel cable. The three students have also integrated a café with a terrace, information boards, a museum area as well as a souvenir shop and conference rooms.
In the second model for the Main Information Center, an old arm of the Main, including a pier and jetty, is being reactivated
In the second model, an old main arm including a pier and landing stage is reactivated. Three students constructed an observation tower on the Maininsel, put a wavy roof on the MIZ and envisaged a waterfall from the roof of the building.

A MIZ in “organic form” with many bulges
Another group presented a MIZ in “organic form” with many bulges. The sixth group came up with a MIZ in the form of the Mainaue with tiny houses floating on an artificial lake. The highlight is a glass corridor that makes it possible to walk dry-shod through the Main and watch the fish swim.
The seventh student, who formed a “one-man group”, wants to create a nature experience. An organic bridge, a large fountain, a river promenade, playgrounds and a Moroccan beach café with pool bar should contribute to this.
Minor intervention in the landscape
A total of 2250 euros in prize money was awarded. Group 3 was the winner and thus the winner of 1000 euros: the students Jan Vahrenhold, Gernot Nikolaus and Jan Paul Miene want to keep the impact on the landscape to a minimum and so they quickly moved the MIZ underground.
The light comes from the ceiling through round windows. The building is to be built in a circle into the Main. Portholes allow a view of the river. Exhibitions and an “experience room” are intended to entertain visitors. Guests can watch performances in an amphitheater. The students moved the stage to the Main. Two separate bridges for pedestrians and cyclists are intended to create a connection to the nearby Main Cycle Path.

A seven-member jury with Mayor Stefan Paulus, architect Christian Kern and Professor Daniela Wenzel chose Group 3 as the winner. Both Mayor Stefan Paulus and Marc Heinz from the Main network emphasized that the competition was an idea competition to explore design options. The concept of the competition winner is not a fixed requirement for architects. With virtual reality glasses, the jury members were able to explore the buildings virtually.
“Architecturally implementable immediately”
“The design can be architecturally implemented immediately, as it has relatively few height differences,” said architect Christian Kern. Only in terms of flood protection must be improved. Financing has not yet been secured either, said Treasurer Marco Depner. Here you have to get the Free State of Bavaria on board, since the municipality of Knetzgau alone cannot finance the project.
