Students occupy university building in action against room shortage in Groningen

The students have united in action group Shelter Our Students (SOS). They argue, among other things, for better information for international students, who come to Groningen in increasing numbers. “They do not feel well informed and end up in appalling circumstances that you would not expect in a country like the Netherlands,” says the action group.

The activists want better emergency shelter and a campus for 2000 people. Organization SOS says that about 660 students have indicated to them that they need shelter. According to the organization, university administrators will come by this afternoon for a meeting.

It is not the first time that action has been taken in the city of Groningen because of the housing shortage. Reporter Baas: “An organizer said to me: we are actually here every year, and that is why the actions have to be a bit harder. Otherwise nothing will happen.”
