37 students from Burgas “Geo Milev” English High School visited Strasbourg to experience a day in the European Parliament at the invitation of Mrs. Esen Aliyeva, administrator and lecturer in the most important institution of the continent.
The high school students were accompanied by the director of AEG “Geo Milev” – Mrs. Jacqueline Neicheva, Mrs. Krasimira Miteva, the deputy director for educational activities and the school psychologist Mrs. Maria Panteleeva.
The group attended a parliamentary session where the election of the Quaestors of Parliament was held.
The students took part in interesting discussions with the host of the visit – Mrs. Aliyeva, who introduced her guests to the role of the European Parliament, and also with the MEPs from ENR, with Mrs. Eva Meidel, a member of the Commission for Industry, Research and Energy, as well as and with Mr. Andrey Novakov, member of the Regional Development Commission. The graduates of the English high school had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Peter Bonnor – representative of the Cabinet of the European Ombudsman /Inquires officer at the Cabinet of EU Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly/, who explained the role of the institution in protecting citizens’ rights and ensuring of transparency in the work of the EP.
Mr. Bonnor also highlighted the current challenges facing the European Parliament in maintaining ethical standards and public trust, emphasizing the need for continuous improvement of regulatory practices.
In a conversation with Ms. Eva Meidel, who plays a key role in the development and regulation of artificial intelligence, the need for collaboration between various stakeholders, from the academic community to the private sector, was highlighted in order to advance research and development in this so much important area.
Ms Maydel expressed confidence that with the right regulation and the right approach, Europe can become the standard for the development and use of artificial intelligence, combining innovation with high standards of safety and ethics.
Students had the opportunity to express their opinion on current issues related to green energy, electric cars, global warming, ethics in Europe.
Together with Mr. Andrey Novakov, the young people commented on the development of policies for electric vehicles and the green transition in Europe.
The participants of the group got acquainted with the work of the European institutions and shared their views on decisions taken at the level of the European Union.
As true reporters, the guests interviewed MEPs about the future of the EU and came to the conclusion that regardless of differences, the strength of a united Europe lies in the absolute conviction of the need for citizens to discuss, listen and show respect to each other.
