“Students can’t take it anymore, it’s a fiasco”: UCLouvain partially renounces its exam software

UCLouvain and the University of Saint-Louis in Brussels will organize most of the June exams remotely in order to reduce the flow of travel and thus help control the spread of the coronavirus.

To do this, UCLouvain has set up TestWe, an online platform that allows students to take their exam from their own computer. This computer software allows remote monitoring for certain exams (blocking access to the internet and computer files as well as taking random photos in compliance with the GDPR).

However, many dysfunctions have been reported to us since its establishment. “The last mock test on TestWe took place this morning, with still many problems. The exams are fast approaching and we have the impression of sinking into a wall”, Olivia writes to us. “Students can’t take it anymore! The use of TestWe turns out to be a fiasco”, adds Corentin.

Other platforms used

Connection problems have been observed in many students, making it impossible to carry out previously mock exams.

Faced with this problem, UCLouvain decided to give up the Test We software. The latter did not support the simultaneous connection of many students. “During one of the blank tests, there were too many students. The servers of the software used did not support this number,” said Isabelle Decoster, spokesperson.

For exams that include a large number of students, the university will use platforms such as Moodle and Teams, devices known by students since the introduction of distance courses. Students will be notified of the terms by email, says Isabelle Decoster. The official exam session will start on June 2.
