Colorful science
Christian Obermeier, a master’s student in the fourth semester of the economics department specializing in e-commerce, brings along not only his academic interests, but also an enthusiasm for e-sports. This idea turned into a successful association that was able to close a gap, especially in times of Corona: the joy of playing and the union of like-minded people in social distancing.

In the conversation, Christian Obermeier shows himself to be an enthusiastic gamer, but who actually enjoys organizing and setting up his own e-sports club outweighs him. He knew e-sports clubs from other universities and so the idea of establishing something like this at the University of Worms was obvious. Good connections to the AStA and the experience already gained from developing our own online shop made implementation easier.
From the foundation to the league
With Marek Völckel and Alexander Löwen, both in the third bachelor semester of the Digital Business Management course, planning for the club started at the end of 2019. The founding members can now look back on a proud record: The association has a ten-person organizational team with a board of directors, a press department, team planning and team captains. There are weekly events with different games each with an average of 30 participants.
There are now over 200 members who either take part in the events or can follow them live on the Internet. And recently a sponsor has already been found. MLP supports the association with t-shirts.
“We have been participating in the university league for two semesters. The Uniliga is an organization which every semester gives all colleges, technical colleges and universities in Germany the opportunity to have their e-sports teams compete against each other, ”says Obermeier happily.
“And the establishment of new teams for the next semester is already in full swing.”
Balance sheet
The e-sports club has been active for two semesters. In order to implement the project, it was necessary to clarify the demand for an e-sports club at the university and clarify the bureaucratic conditions for the establishment of the club and the transfer of the club to the university’s infrastructure. All of this could not be achieved without colleagues. Obermeier was surprised to see that an interdisciplinary collaboration quickly developed. Meanwhile, there are also considerations to join forces with students from Bingen and students from Worms have also registered their interest in the e-sports club.
“I never thought that this idea would pick up speed so quickly. Perhaps Corona has even had a positive effect on us here. But now we assume that we will continue to grow. The need in Worms is great. I met so many great and committed people, it was really worth the effort, ”says Obermeier enthusiastically.
