The metropolis of Metz has joined the already existing club of 30 Territorial Observatories for Student Housing (OTLE). A team from Aguram collected the data and delivered analyses. Here are several key figures.
• 23 779 students are enrolled in metropolitan France at the start of the 2020 academic year. Including 16,800 at the University of Lorraine. The other 7,000 are in BTS, preparatory classes, engineering schools, nursing or paramedical schools, etc.
• 55 % of students live with at least one parent, 8% as a couple, 22% alone, 5% with roommates and 7% in a hostel. In Nancy, only 36% of students live with their parents.
• 46 % of students rent privately, 25% in furnished apartments, 19% in residences or hostels, 6% in public housing. 2%, or 227, own their home. And as many are hosted for free.
• The Crous should offer 2 013 housing, when the new P8 residence is built, with its 130 housing units of 17 m² minimum. In the P1 to P5 residences, the old 9 m rooms have become 13 m² studio apartments, with kitchenette and toilets.
• 20% of student tenants pay less than €300 per month in rent 33% between €300 and €400, 33% between €400 and €500, and 14% pay more than €500.
• 45 % of university students are satisfied with their accommodation, compared to 70% of engineering students.
• 22 % of students take their own car to get to their place of study, 4% carpool, 39% walk, 20% with the Met and 3% by bike.
