A woman was rescued from a submerged car in Delft this afternoon by a student. According to police, the 23-year-old man didn’t think twice and jumped into the icy water to get her out of the car.

The accident happened in the center of the city. According to the police, the driver left the road due to slippery conditions. The vehicle then ended up upside down in the canal. “The student made a hero of himself by his action,” the police said.

The student, who prefers not to be named, saw the accident happen on the first floor of his student house. “I looked out the window and saw in front of me on the other side of the canal a car skidding and flying into the canal,” he says. Broadcasting West. “As the car flew in, it flipped over. I saw it happen and sprinted outside while calling everyone from the house to come along.”

Broken window

Once outside, they saw the car sinking upside down in the water. “I called across and asked if anyone was in there. Then someone said, ‘yes!’” the student said. That was the moment he took off his shirt and jumped into the canal, some of which still had ice on it.

“That was quite cold,” he reflects. “Then I swam to the car. I saw someone sitting in the car, a woman. She hit her hands on the window in a blind panic,” says the student. “Then I saw that it was serious. She couldn’t figure it out on her own.”

It was not immediately possible to get the woman out of the car. The student says that his roommates threw a stone into the water on the quay, with which he tried in vain to break a window. Then a hatchet appeared, but it turned out to be too big to throw. Finally, a hammer was thrown into the water, with which he managed to break a window.

Ate a cake

He pulled the woman out of the car and managed to get her safely to the side. “Then I immediately stepped into the hot shower.” He doesn’t know exactly how long it all took. “It felt really long, but it was probably two minutes.”

The student remembers that the woman was in shock once they stood on the quay. After the rescue operation and a hot shower, he spoke to her for a while. “She was on her way to pick up her three children from the school around the corner. She was very shocked.”

The woman is very grateful to him, he says. “She gave me hugs and we had tea together inside. Her husband also came by and gave me a hug.” Mayor Marja van Bijsterveldt also came by to express her gratitude. “She came by with cake, so we had a cake together.”
