It’s a barely believable story. Panicked during a police check this Monday, August 28 in Amiens in the Somme, a 20-year-old Grenoble resident refused to comply, believing he was dealing with fake police. One of the officials used his weapon. The student engineer was given a one-year suspended prison sentence for “aggravated violence”. It testifies.
“I just wanted to save myself and not hurt anyone“says Clément, a twenty-year-old from Grenoble, sentenced for the first time in his life by the courts, this Wednesday, August 30, as reported by our colleagues from Mail Picard, present at the hearing which took place in Amiens, in the Somme department. The sophomore in engineering school was found guilty and sentenced for “aggravated violence against a police officer” and “refusal to comply“.
A student with no history. Until there. If Clément was in Amiens, it was because he was visiting his girlfriend who had just moved to this city in northern France, “to surprise him” he confides to France 3 Alpes. On Monday August 28, the young man is in his vehicle, parked in a parking lot located in the Saint-Maurice district of Amiens. “My windows were open, the engine was off and I was chatting with friends on Snapchat“explains Clement.
He then sees a car park just behind him and sees four men approaching. “They arrived in an aggressive way (…) They were wearing armbands but I wasn’t sure they were police“says Clément who specifies having closed and locked his windows, panicked. A fear due in part to his own story and that of his brother, attacked a few years ago by fake police officers, in Isère.
But this Monday, in Amiens, it was indeed real police. Officials from the anti-crime brigade (BAC) who “had the mission to shoot in the neighborhood, where a young man had been killed the previous week” justifies Maître Ghislain Fay, the lawyer for one of them, “they saw a slightly bent man in a parked car in a parking lot known to be a deal spot.“
Clément doubts their identity. “The young man asked them to prove to him that they were indeed police officers. One of them puts his armband on the windshield, another shows him his radio“explains the lawyer.
“They threatened to break my windows” remembers the student in his second year of engineering school in Grenoble. Faced with “aggressiveness“of these men, he panics.
I told myself that I had to save my skin.

Clément engages reverse gear, backs up, hits the unmarked police car and flees. When he backs up, “two police officers find themselves between a wall and the rear of the vehicle“says Me Ghislain Fay. One of the police officers uses his weapon and shoots at Clément’s car, on the passenger side. “His goal was to get the driver to react so that he wouldn’t run over them”explains the lawyer.
“This amplified my state of panic, I thought I was going to lose my life, that it was over“reacts Clement.
The young man from Grenoble fled. A chase then begins in the streets of Amiens. While driving, Clément takes his phone and calls 17. He then explains to the police station that he is being chased by false police officers. At the end of the line, he is told that it is indeed a police car and that he must stop. Clement runs immediately.
“I was forcibly removed from my vehicle, put my head on the ground and handcuffed“recounts the young man who evokes insults from the police, comments denied by the lawyer contacted who confirms however that”the police arrested him with virility“.
Clément is then taken to the police station where he will spend 48 hours in police custody. His car will also be searched.
“I was very bad, I was asked a lot of questions about my life“during the 48 hours of police custody, the student explains, “I was put under pressure, I was told that I was a criminal.“
I felt like I was in another world.

“He is a boy who has a very particular profile” concedes the policeman’s lawyer, “unknown to police, no narcotics, no alcohol“. Yet, “Clément has experienced extremely violent things“regrets Nathalie, Clément’s mother, currently in Amiens alongside her son.
This Wednesday, August 30, Clément was tried in an immediate appearance before the criminal court of Amiens, in the absence of the four police officers concerned. “The prosecutor questioned the fact that I was afraid and wanted me to confess that it was voluntary violence“explains Clément, confronted for the first time with justice.
I recognize the refusal to comply but I did not want to hurt them.

“The fact that the policeman fired does not seem to be a problem for anyone“says Nathalie, her mother. For his part, the lawyer for the policeman behind the shooting says that his client”was very scared and is very scarred, his vocation is to protect“.
At the hearing, the prosecutor requested 10 months in prison with a warrant of committal. “How can a brilliant student like Clément get a warrant?” asks Master Ilie Mihaela Delia, his lawyer.
The Isérois was finally given a one-year suspended prison sentence, a fine of 2,000 euros, half of which was suspended. He must also compensate the two police officers who filed a complaint against him.
Clément and his family plan to appeal this decision and file a complaint against the four police officers for “moral and physical violence“.
