Student dies in accident a few hours after prom
A Pennsylvania high school student was killed in a car accident on Saturday morning just hours after attending the prom.
Nicholas Mannino, 18, of Pipersville, Pennsylvania, was a passenger in a car with three other students who lost control around 1:20 a.m. on Ledgedale Road, according to Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland.
He said the car rolled over and hit several trees during the accident. Mannino was taken to the Geisinger Medical Center in Scranton, where he was pronounced dead around 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
At the time of the incident, the students were on their way to the Poconos, where they planned to stay over the weekend.
Mannino was one of four Central Bucks East students who were in the car at the time of the incident. One of the students suffered life-threatening injuries, her current condition is unknown.
Headmaster Chad Watters confirmed the accident in a letter to parents and students on Saturday, saying that the teenagers involved in the accident had attended the prom on Friday night, which was from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. local time, according to the Bucks County Courier Times took place.
“It is natural to question the cause, but I ask you to focus on the need to support our families, our students, one another and our wider community as we process this tragedy,” Watters wrote in the letter, which ABC 6 is present.
“The death of a student, especially on the threshold of a solemn time of the year, makes us deeply saddened and made us seek answers.
“The emptiness that is left behind when something of this magnitude happens, coupled with the unspeakable grief in the wake of such a loss, is very real and brings with it many emotions.”
Tommy Smith, who was one of the teenagers in the car when it crashed, told ABC 6 that Saturday was “the worst day of my life, I lost my best friend,” and revealed that he was rescued by one of the other passengers who was “my only other conscious friend.”
Acting Superintendent Abram Lucabaugh said the school district is working with students and their families to provide support following the incident, telling the Courier Times that it “is focused on providing support to our students and families. This is a brief summary.
