– In February, the Roth Gymnasium won the main prize in the student competition of the Federal Agency for Civic Education. Now the Minister of Education, Michael Piazolo, paid tribute to the winners, including two school groups from Roth and two from Nuremberg.
In the school competition for political education, schoolchildren throughout Germany deal with current topics from politics and society – from the Basic Law to the unconditional basic income to transport and environmental policy. This year, in which the competition celebrates its 50th anniversary, a travel prize and 52 cash prizes went to the Bavarian participants.
“Our students have shown again how thoughtful and creative they can be when dealing with contemporary historical issues,” said Minister of Education Michael Piazolo. “The competition for political education sharpens the eye for the complex issues of a networked world and is an indispensable contribution to democratic education. I congratulate all the students on their great achievements and thank the teachers for accompanying and supporting the projects!”
As part of the school competition, groups of schoolchildren independently deal with a self-chosen, current topic. This year, more than 233 school groups from across Bavaria took part in the competition, which is advertised annually by the Federal Agency for Civic Education. Patron of the current round is Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Pupils from all types of school could participate as a team in the two age categories “fourth to eighth grade” and “eighth to twelfth grade”. In the 2021 competition year, a total of around 1800 school groups took part nationwide.
