Tyler Gilreath’s mother appeals to young people

Tyler Gilreath had just started his sophomore year at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington when he contracted the coronavirus. The 20-year-old had not been vaccinated. He thought he was young and too healthy to have problems with the virus – a fatal mistake.

Tamra Demello’s son wanted to get vaccinated in Wilmington

Tamra Demello is heartbroken. Her son was 20 years old and had his whole life ahead of him. Now he’s dead. Tyler Gilreath died of Covid-19. Demello wants others to be spared this fate and speaks publicly about the tragic loss. For months she had pleaded with her son to get vaccinated – to no avail. Tyler was of the opinion that he was young, healthy and had no previous illness and therefore he did not need the vaccination protection. “When they are 20, you can’t force them to do something they don’t want,” Demello said in an interview with The News & Observer. “I can’t drag him into the car.”

Finally, he agreed to be vaccinated as soon as he was in his second year at university. But it didn’t come to that. According to Demello, her son became infected days after she brought him from her home in Cary to the University in Wilmington. After testing positive on August 20, Tyler developed a fever and suffered from nausea and other symptoms. On September 7th, he seemed to have survived the worst, the symptoms receded and Tyler’s corona test was negative. “We thought he was pretty much over it,” says Demello – but things turned out differently.

However, Tyler continued to have a headache and was lethargic. The doctor diagnosed a sinus infection. After a few days he developed a staph infection. On the night of September 20, Tyler’s health deteriorated rapidly. It felt like he had lost control of the right side of his body, Demello said. In the emergency room, it was found that the infection had spread to Tyler’s brain, which was swollen. Doctors opened his skull to use a catheter to drain fluid. But it was too late. Tyler opened his eyes again one day and pressed her hand, but died on September 27th.

“I am incredibly devastated,” writes his mother on Facebook. She now hopes that “we young people who think we are invincible can convince them to get vaccinated. What happened to my son can happen to them too.” Because Tyler was an organ donor, he gives other people a chance for a life-saving transplant. “We are very grateful that he will continue to live. Tyler would have been really glad that he could at least help someone else,” writes his mother. (mst)
