The Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards, a celebration of nature’s funniest moments captured on camera, recently crowned its 2024 winners at a glamorous ceremony held at the Oxo Gallery in London. This year’s competition saw a record-breaking 9,000 entries, making it the most competitive edition in the awards’ 10-year history. Among the standout images, Italian photographer milko Marchetti’s hilarious shot of a red squirrel stuck in a tree took home the top prize, earning him the title of overall winner.
Marchetti’s winning photo, aptly titled “Stuck Squirrel,” captured the moment a red squirrel found itself awkwardly wedged in a tree trunk. The image stood out among a pool of 40 finalists, wich were previously showcased by PetaPixel in September. The judges described the selection process as fiercely competitive, with only a few points separating the top entries.
“I have taken many, many photographs of squirrels, in many situations over the years in italy, but this one struck me as really funny and such a strange position, becuase it is that exact moment when the squirrel is detaching its back legs from the trunk to enter its hide,” Marchetti said. “Whenever I show this image at the nature seminars at my local photography club, the audience always explode with raucous laughter, so I had to enter it!”
As the overall winner, Marchetti was awarded an unforgettable safari experience in Kenya’s masai Mara, courtesy of Alex Walker’s serian. He also received a handcrafted trophy from the Wonder Workshop in Tanzania and a new photography bag from Think Tank. When he got the call from Tom Sullam, co-founder of the Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards, Marchetti couldn’t contain his excitement.
“Looking at the beautiful finalists’ photos, I would never have thought I would be the chosen one. What can I say — I am so, so happy,” Marchetti added.
Stefan Maier, General Manager of Marketing at Nikon Europe, praised Marchetti’s achievement, saying, “We are thrilled to celebrate Milko Marchetti’s outstanding achievement in the Nikon Comedy Photography Awards 2024. His image,‘Stuck Squirrel,’ brilliantly captures the playful and unpredictable moments that make nature so enchanting.”
