The quarrel-ravaged construction group Strukton of entrepreneur Gerard Sanderink published its final annual report for 2020 with a great delay on Friday night, with a loss of € 198 million. Due to the lack of data, the auditor refrained from an opinion on the document.
The loss was partly due to the construction of a subway in the Saudi capital Riyadh that went wrong. The company lost €64 million on that project. In addition, the Public Prosecution Service has yet to decide whether to prosecute Strukton for bribery. The company is suspected of having paid a bribe to win the contract.
Vibration-free
Then there is the disagreement about the construction of the new RIVM headquarters in Utrecht. The dispute revolves around strengthening and making the laboratories in the building vibration-free. It is right next to the busy A27 in Utrecht and is not yet being used. According to a new estimate by Strukton, the project will be delayed by almost 3.5 years. The building is now expected to be completed by the end of next year. In 2020, Strukton lost €71 million on the project and the company expects this amount to increase. Strukton has some 4,000 employees and an annual turnover of approximately €1.4 billion.
Legally, the annual report should have been published earlier, but Strukton was without an accountant for some time and also had to contend with personnel problems in the field of financial control, the company announced on Saturday. It also points to the complications surrounding CEO Gerard Sanderink, who was eventually suspended by the Supervisory Board in March of this year.
To sell
This week it was announced that CEO Sanderink wants to sell Strukton and his IT company Centric. He says he is a victim of the Russian mafia. At Centric, however, Sanderink has been sidelined by the judge for mismanagement, because he cannot separate his private interests from the interests of his company. This may also happen at Strukton.
Strukton has withdrawn from the Riyadh metro project in Saudi Arabia. “The consequence of this is, among other things, that the accountant no longer has access to the financial data of the consortium in Saudi Arabia of which Strukton was a part,” says Strukton.
For this reason, accountant Mazars should have decided to issue a disclaimer of opinion for the entirety of the annual accounts. Because the 2020 figures are reflected in the auditor’s report for the 2021 financial year, Strukton also expects an abstention from this.
Van Rijbroek
The 74-year-old Sanderink has been in the spotlight for years because of his quarrel with his ex Brigitte van Egten, the former director of his solar panel company. He put her aside for the striking self-proclaimed cyber expert Rian van Rijbroek, who reportedly assists him with advice and action. Due to repeated and unjustified accusations against Van Egten, Sanderink has now lost more than € 4.6 million in penalty payments to her.
