DECRYPTION –Tormented at all levels, the UN is struggling to emerge as a player in resolving the conflict in the Middle East.
In New York as in Gaza, pressure has been increasing on the UN since the reawakening of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, after the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel on October 7.
In the Israeli camp, the declarations of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres caused an outcry, while the Security Council failed to vote on a resolution. Added to these institutional impasses is the tragedy on the ground. Friday, November 10, UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East), announced that 101 of its employees had died in Gaza since October 7. Two days later, another UN agency, the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) declared that it had suffered a strike on its headquarters in Gaza, where many people died or were injured.
