Structural problems in a parking lot in New York City created chaos for Amtrak passengers traveling between the Big Apple and Albany.
Service has been disrupted since Sunday afternoon after officials found a series of “structural issues” in the garage of the 10th Avenue in Manhattan and Empire Line de Amtrak goes under the garage.

DOB officials issued an evacuation order for the garage, and Amtrak planned to install “overhead protection” over the lower tracks to keep operations running normally. That only lasted until Sunday.
That morning, installers alerted the DOB to more structural defects in the steel beams. The additional cracks and deterioration found Sunday turned out to be a major safety issue and led to the suspension of the Empire Line between New York City and Albany.

“Due to safety concerns arising from structural issues at a privately owned, non-Amtrak building on the Empire Line tracks in New York City, Amtrak service is suspended between Cross-Harmon (CRT) and the New York City (NYP). Passengers can ride Metro North trains from Grand Central Terminal between NYP and CRT, where tickets will be accepted.”

Trains 233, 234, 235, 237, 240, 241, 244 and 288 are cancelled. Trains 49 and 69 will begin in Albany (ALB). Trains 63, 64, 232, 236, 238, 239, 243, 281, 283 and 294 will start and end at CRT.
