Struber left it open whether footballers from Austria and in particular from Red Bull Salzburg or partner club Liefering could be directed to New York and simply said: “We also have players from Austria in our sights.”
The only Austrian kicker in his current squad, Daniel Royer, will also play an important role in 2021, announced Struber. In contrast, the loan contract with Samuel Tetteh was not extended, so the Ghanaian striker returns to the Austrian champions in winter.
Philosophy advantage
For the “cops”, Struber worked as a trainer, among other things, in the academy area and at Liefering, before the stations WAC and Barnsley follow. Now the Salzburg resident is back in the Red Bull soccer world. “It is of course an advantage if you already know the philosophy,” said Struber, who is in constant contact with Salzburg coach and ex-New York coach Jesse Marsch.
According to the Salzburg native, Major League Soccer is to be placed above the Austrian Bundesliga “in terms of its technical characteristics”. “But in terms of tactical focus, you can have a lot of influence as a coach.”
Struber is likely to fly back to New York in early or mid-January. His wife and two children – the daughter will graduate in June, the eleven-year-old son plays in Salzburg’s Red Bull offspring – should follow in the summer. “Then we want to have the family life that we all imagine.”
