Gerhard Struber from Salzburg is turning his back on the English second division club Barnsley and will be the head coach of the New York Red Bulls. The Major League Soccer (MLS) club announced this in a broadcast on Tuesday.
Struber still had an ongoing contract with Barnsley until the summer of 2022, but it contained an exit clause. If an interested party pays the contractually agreed transfer fee, the decision is “entirely up to Gerhard”, Barnsley managing director Dane Murphy recently stated.
Struber moved from WAC to England in November, with Barnsley he then successfully managed to stay in the league championship in a heartbeat finish. The New York Red Bulls involved in the MLS had been looking for a coach since breaking up with Chris Armas. The 43-year-old Struber worked as a supervisor in the youth division of Red Bull Salzburg for several years.
