From the 23rd (Tuesday) to the 25th (Thursday), the atmospheric pressure will become winter-like, and the coldest air of the season will flow all the way to western Japan. There is a risk of heavy snow and storms on the Sea of Japan side. There will also be places on the Pacific side where snow clouds will flow in.
Intense cold and JPCZ
On the 22nd (Monday), a low pressure system will develop and pass over northern Japan. From around the 23rd (Tuesday) to the 25th (Thursday), a winter-like atmospheric pressure pattern is expected, and the coldest air of the season is expected to flow in. Cold air below -6°C, which is the guideline for snow on the flatlands, will flow into the area around 1,500 meters above the archipelago, and even stronger cold air, below -12°C, is expected to flow into parts of western Japan.
Additionally, there is a possibility that the JPCZ* will become apparent, and the snow clouds that have developed from Hokuriku to the northern Kinki region will flow one after another.
*The Japan Sea Polar Air Mass Convergence Zone (JPCZ) is a region where the cold winds flowing from the Siberian continent are once bisected by the Changbai Mountains (highest peak: Mt. Paekdu, 2,744 meters) located in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, and the leeward area of Japan is the JPCZ. This is a convergence zone (line where snow clouds are likely to develop) that is formed when they meet again at the sea. JPCZ makes it easier for snow clouds to develop, and when these snow clouds flow one after another, they often turn into heavy snow.
Fear of heavy snow and storms mainly on the Sea of Japan side
Snow will fall widely from the Sea of Japan side of Hokkaido to the Sanin area, and there is a risk of heavy snowfall. There will be a sharp increase in snowfall mainly along the mountains, and there will also be more snowfall in flat areas. The winds will be strong and there is a risk of severe stormy weather. Be wary of traffic disruptions caused by heavy snow, snowstorms, and snowdrifts. It will snow even in northern Kyushu, and there are likely to be some places where it will snow. Be careful of snow accumulation and frozen roads.
Even on the Pacific side, there will be places where snow clouds will flow in, such as Tohoku, Tokai, Kinki, and Shikoku. There is a possibility of snow in Nagoya as well.
Maximum temperatures will be around or below normal. The northerly wind will strengthen and the weather will become even colder. For those taking entrance exams, please take care of your physical condition.
