Strong winds, heavy rains and thunderstorms, Hurricane Douglas arrives in Hawaii

Hurricane Douglas is approaching the Hawaiian Islands dangerously. Even though it weakened on Saturday, the United States’ National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami remains vigilant.

“We know it gets weaker the closer it gets, but it will still have a significant impact on every island.”Hawaii Governor David Ige said at a press conference.

Since yesterday, Hurricane Douglas has moved to category 1 as it approaches the Hawaiian archipelago.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has warned that in addition to high winds, a storm surge up to 3 feet above normal tides is possible, as well as large waves and heavy rain. Up to 5-10 inches of rain is possible from West Maui to Kauai, with the greatest threat in higher terrain, which could lead to flash floods and landslides.

Douglas’s arrival comes at a time when the United States continues to be affected by the coronavirus, complicating storm shelters and relief operations as the demands of social distancing and other prevention efforts are taken into account.

In an interview, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said: “It’s a double whammy”.

Authorities are asking residents to stay at home and only go out in an emergency.
