Strong winds cause partial collapse of a building in Jersey City – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW JERSEY – A building under construction collapsed in Jersey City after strong winds tore through the area Monday night.

The collapse caused damage to several buildings along 5th Street, including a school that will be closed Tuesday, according to authorities. The four-story building tipped to one side and crews tried to stabilize it Monday night, but demolition crews will likely have to tear the building down entirely.

“We are concerned about these buildings on the other side because if there are more landslides, they could destroy these buildings as well,” said Jersey City Fire Department Chief Steven McGill.

“There is a school in the back, the Growing Tree School, that is also damaged. The back of this building actually blew five to ten feet off its foundation and hit the side of that school,” he added.

Ten residents of the two houses on either side of the collapsed building were being relocated, authorities said, but no injuries were reported.

Winds reached up to 45 mph until midnight, according to The Weather Authority. Those winds also brought down trees throughout the tri-state area.
