Strong winds and downpours could affect citizens living outside their homes in the south

As if for the hundreds of citizens, in the southwest region, who sleep outside their homes that were not enough, they will now face a complicated weather forecast from today, Thursday, until the rest of the weekend.

The meteorologist of National Meteorology Service (SNM) Emanuel Rodríguez said that from this night the wind will have a sustained speed between 15 to 25 miles per hour (mph) and possible gusts that can rise to 30 miles per hour. At the same time, the development of passenger downpours in that area is not ruled out, so he raised the alert voice.

“That panorama of time will be extended to the whole island, but taking into account their status (refugees), attention must be paid. For today we will have passing rains throughout the island, but in the afternoon those downpours will be concentrated in the southwest since the wind will drag them there, ”Rodríguez said.

After the 6.4 earthquake that shook the island last Tuesday at 4:24 a.m., there are hundreds of citizens who have decided to spend the day and night outside their homes, in their cars or in large parking lots with other communities in fear of the roof of their residences collapsing during a new earthquake.

Until yesterday afternoon, the Public Housing Administration He explained that the number of refugees had increased to 2,267 people from 15 municipalities. The agency had 18 shelters enabled in 15 municipalities, in which 125 minors housed with their relatives were counted.

“What happens is that we have a high pressure system that is strengthening in Atlantic waters and drag some rain patches to the local area. This pattern should continue until the beginning of next week, ”Rodríguez said.

Although the meteorologist stressed that rains should not generate high thunderstorms or cause significant accumulations of precipitation, he said that the event of high winds should be taken into account to prevent shelters that have been equipped with tents, in the southern municipalities, are affected.

“Keep in mind that this event will begin today and should begin to decrease by next Monday,” he said.

Although the fear that has caused the constant seismic activity has diminished the attendance of citizens to the beaches, the SNM warned, in turn, that sea conditions will not be suitable for bathers due to the strong wind.

“The wind blows so hard that the waves will fluctuate between five to 12 feet high. In fact, there is a high risk of sea currents for the beaches of the north coast and more beaches will be added as the event of strong winds is complicated, ”Rodríguez said.

Explain low tide event

For the past few days, and in the face of constant seismic movements, several users of social networks have raised the alert voice when they realize that the sea presumably withdraws from the coast, but these assertions are not correct.

According to Rodriguez, the sea is not retiring as a result of the earthquakes, but the tide is going down in response to the proximity of the moon to the earth.

“Low tide is a phenomenon that occurs daily, this time the moon is at its closest point to the earth so we see the most pronounced low tide,” said the meteorologist.

“According to the Magueyes beach tide gauge in Lajas, the low tide for today will be at 11:27 at night. The water should be a quarter of a foot below normal. Tomorrow, again, around 10:00 in the morning we will have high tide with about three quarters of feet (eight inches) ”Rodriguez explained.
