Strong typhoon approaches Japan / Article

As Typhoon Nanmadol approaches, the Japanese Meteorological Agency has issued a special warning for Kagoshima and Miyazaki in the Kyushu region. The agency rarely issues such a serious warning.

The island of Kyushu has already been hit by heavy rain and wind, as a result of which nearly 98,000 families have already been left without electricity.

Until the storm ended, train and ferry traffic on the island was suspended and flights were canceled.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kisida urged people to stay away from dangerous places and to evacuate during the day, as it would be dangerous to do so at night.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency warned that strong winds, rain and waves could create unprecedented danger in the region and urged residents to exercise extreme caution.

“The wind will be so strong that some houses could collapse,” an agency representative warned Saturday.

Broadcaster NHK, which compiled the local alerts, said more than four million people were advised to evacuate on the island of Kyushu and that more than 15,000 people in Kagoshima and Miyazaki went to local shelters.
