Strong snow storm in Spain delays nominations for the National Film Awards

Update 9.45 am: The announcement of the 2021 Goyas Nominations has been rescheduled for next Monday, January 18 at 11 am local time. The initial plan was to announce it today but the event, which will be held at the headquarters of the Spanish Academy in Madrid, had to be delayed for a week due to heavy snowfall in the country’s capital.

The actress Anna Belen and the actor Danny Rovera will announce the nominations, accompanied by the president of the Academy, Mariano Barroso.

Longer term

Before 6:23 am: Severe weather in Spain has caused widespread disruption, including the postponement of the announcement of nominations for the Goyas 2021, the country’s national film awards.

The storm covered parts of the country with snow, especially the capital Madrid, which has seen a height of up to 20 cm in the last 24 hours and has sealed off much of the city. At least three people died in adverse conditions, the biggest snowfall in Spain in 50 years.

Goyas was scheduled to announce the nominations at 11 a.m. local time on Monday, January 11. The Film Academy has issued a notice that it has received an official recommendation not to proceed with the event and will instead reschedule a new date, which has yet to be confirmed. Goyas’ 35th concert is scheduled for March 6, 2021 and is hosted by Spanish superstar Antonio Banderas.

The snow began the night of Friday, January 8, blocking roads and leaving people stranded on the roads of Madrid. The city’s airport has also closed and all trains to and from the capital are canceled.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez issued an advisory for people to stay home, while King Felipe and Queen Letizia posted a similar message on Twitter urging “extreme caution.”
