German police have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of a 27-year-old man at Frankfurt central station on Tuesday night. The 54-year-old man is believed to have shot the victim dead on platform 9 of the busy station, authorities said.

According to dpa, the incident took place at around 9 p.m. local time. The alleged attacker approached the young man from behind and shot him several times with a pistol. “The attacker tried to flee, but was caught by the police shortly afterwards on a nearby platform,” the official statement said.

The identification of the weapon used in the crime was key to the investigation. “During the search, a pistol was found, which is believed to be the murder weapon,” La Voz de Galicia reported. Frankfurt central station was closed to all rail traffic for about 25 minutes while the police operation was carried out.

Authorities revealed that both the suspect and the victim are of Turkish nationality, although the motive for the attack has not yet been clarified. “The investigation is still open to clarify what happened, especially the background of the crime,” the statement added.

The 54-year-old is expected to appear before a judge to determine whether he should be held in pre-trial detention pending further investigation, dpa reported.

Among those who witnessed the incident, some expressed fear at the violence taking place in such a busy public space. “It’s really scary that something like this happens in the middle of the train station,” said one student, who was on his way to Munich. This sentiment was echoed by other commuters and station workers who witnessed the events.

The area around the central station has been notorious for its bad reputation for years. A man who has worked at a bakery near platform 9 for more than 20 years told dpa: “It has definitely gotten worse.”

Commuters flooded the station again on Wednesday, just hours after the fatal shooting. This shows a rapid recovery of activity at the station, although the event has left a mark on the memories of witnesses.
