Strong fall in salmon prices | Finansavisen

Salmon prices fall sharply, but are still in the region of NOK 25 per kilo above production costs.

That’s what Intrafish writes on Friday.

– It has been a rubbish week, says an exporter to IntraFish.

He reports that the prices are down a couple of kroner every day since Monday and maybe 10 kroner down since last Friday.

– For us exporters, the week has been red-hot, but that’s how it is: When you’re part of the upswing, you also have to be part of the downswing, he adds.

He believes that just before 1pm today it was too early to be too assertive about the price level. It won’t settle until around three o’clock. But some talk about around NOK 70 per kilo on average, and others around NOK 80.

– Ideally, the cut will land somewhere in between, he says.

Another exporter also reports a turbulent week.

– This is the week we will soon forget, he says and reports an average for breeders of NOK 75 to 80 per kilo.

– I don’t know what actually happened. There was a lot of unsold fish left from last week. Orders are down throughout Europe, and then the Chinese New Year is celebrated, which brings down demand also from that part of the world, he tells IntraFish.

He reports “extreme differences” in price.

– Fewer contracts have been entered into. That means more trading on the spot, and that has again led to extreme volatility, he says.

IntraFish has only two sources for the following estimate of price to breeder:

2–3 kilos: kroner 66

3–4 kilos: kroner 73–75

4–5 kilos: kroner 75–76

5–6 kilos: kroner 78–79

6+ kilos: kroner 80–85

Last Friday, IntraFish reported prices of over NOK 100 per kilo for 6+.
