A magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook the Greek island of Crete on Monday. One person died, local media reported.
The quake was registered at 9.17 local time and its depth was only 2 km.

There are no reports of casualties. People are outside and are frightened by the strong earthquake, said the mayor of Heraklion Vassilis Lambrinos. There is damage to the roads, some of which are closed by fallen rocks.
Fallen roofs of buildings, as well as walls of houses, were reported by the fire department with a warning to people on the island of Crete to be very careful when driving. There were stones on the cars, but the drivers were not injured.

Authorities closed all schools on the island. Residents of Crete reported that there was a loud noise before the earthquake and most of them thought that a plane was crashing. The epicenter is at sea, 23 kilometers northwest of the village of Arvi, on the south coast of the island, according to the Greek Institute of Geodynamics.

Seismologists are adamant that the aftershocks will last a long time, but the first 24 hours are critical. The quake was also felt on the island of Santorini without causing damage.
