A local government official told BBC that the death toll of more than 250 is likely to rise, and more than 150 others injured.
The quake occurred about 44 kilometers southeast of the city of Khost.

BBC reported that tremors were also felt as far as 500 kilometers in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, according to a report by the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center added that several eyewitnesses claimed to have felt earthquakes in the Afghan capital, Kabul, and the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
The Guardian report, earthquake that rocked southern Afghanistan had a magnitude of 6.1 on Wednesday morning local time.
Among the dead were also from Nangarhar Province and Khost City.
