Strong earthquake in Crete | ABC News

The epicenter is located about 20 km south of the island’s largest city Heraklion and 7 kilometers north of the rural town of Thrapsano.

EMSC first set the strength to 6.5, but then downgraded to 6.0.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute estimates that the quake had a magnitude of 5.8. It is common to have different measurements of the strength of an earthquake right after it has occurred.

The quake hit at approximately 8.20 Norwegian time on Monday morning. In Crete it was 9.20.

TV pictures show that many people fled to the streets, and eyewitnesses report damage to buildings.

There have been no reports of injuries so far.
