Strong Baumann holds on to the three points against VfB
No Serhou Guirassy, no win: Surprise team VfB Stuttgart suffered their second defeat of the season against TSG Hoffenheim in an entertaining 2:3 (0:2) and missed the temporary leap to the top of the Bundesliga table. Hoffenheim, on the other hand, remains the best away team in the league, with TSG moving further up the table with their fifth win in their fifth game.
Hoffenheim TSG took the lead in the fourth minute through Grischa Prömel. Wout Weghorst increased the score for Stuttgart’s former coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s team with a penalty kick (21st) according to video evidence. New national player Chris Führich shortened the score (61′), but Robert Skov made it 1:3 (66′). However, Deniz Undav (73rd) quickly struck back. TSG keeper Oliver Baumann saved a self-inflicted penalty from Undav (30′) in the first half.
As expected, the 27-year-old replaced Guirassy, who suffered a thigh muscle injury in the 3-0 win at Union Berlin last week. The striker had already come on as a substitute for Guirassy at Union and scored there.
Of course, Guirassy, who scored 14 goals in eight games, is “a central player for us,” said VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß before kick-off on Sky, “but we also showed against Union that we can do it without him.”
VfB suffered a setback early on. After a great pass from Weghorst, Maximilian Beier was initially denied by Alexander Nübel, and Prömel coldly converted the follow-up shot.
VfB shook briefly and could have quickly equalized through Undav after a mistake by Florian Grillitsch. However, Baumann responded brilliantly. Stuttgart stayed on the trigger and TSG were dangerous on the counterattack. One of them led to a penalty after a foul by Anthony Rouault on the agile Beier, which Weghorst was lucky to convert. Referee Felix Zwayer checked the scene via video.
But Stuttgart was hardly impressed by the next setback and missed the connection despite a few good chances before the break. Undav was unlucky with his penalty, which Baumann was able to direct onto the post.
After the change, Stuttgart’s dominance continued. Undav set up the heel for Führich. However, during VfB’s pressing phase, Skov scored on one of the rare TSG counterattacks. Undav was unlucky with a shot against the post shortly afterwards, but then scored shortly afterwards.
