Most adult strokes are associated with preventable risk factors, often associated with lifestyle, and which can be acted upon for prevention.
After a stroke, prevention of recurrence is also essential.
The national health strategy provides the public policy framework for stroke prevention.
Act on modifiable risk factors

Some factors cannot be changed or can only be changed slightly: age, genetic or family factors, or having already suffered from a cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease, an arterial malformation (aneurysm) or a cardiac malformation.

Among adults under 50, traditional risk factors, such as smoking and high blood pressure, are also implicated. Other factors are discussed, such as the consumption of psychoactive substances: cannabis, cocaine, heroin.
The national health strategy, a framework for prevention policy
The stroke prevention strategy is based on two axes of the national health strategy and the National Public Health Plan “Prevention Priority”:
My Prevention Assessment: an innovative and ambitious system
“My Prevention Assessment” is a time ofexchange dedicated to health prevention to take stock of your lifestyle habits and your environment with a health professional.
You will thus be able to understand and act on what determines your state of health, benefit from screening actions and fight against the appearance of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases or even certain cancers.
Fully covered by health insurance, it is done with a doctor, pharmacist, midwife, or nurse to benefit from personalized advice and live in good health longer. The goal is to become an actor in your health.
For whom?
Prevention assessments are intended for all people at key ages in life, i.e. between:
- 18 and 25 years old;
- 45 and 50 years old;
- 60 and 65 years old;
- 70 and 75 years old.

Prevention of stroke recurrences
The risk of stroke is increased after a first stroke, prevention of recurrences must be initiated as early as possible after a cerebral infarction.
The objective is to control the patient’s risk factors, help modify lifestyle habits based on therapeutic education of the patient, and treat pathologies associated with stroke.
Raise awareness of the warning signs of stroke and what to do
The dissemination of knowledge of stroke symptoms among the population was based on the communication campaigns of the national stroke action plan 2010-2014 and the mobilization of numerous stakeholders: Regional Health Agencies (ARS), associations, learned societies.
October 29: World Stroke Day
Why a World Stroke Day?
- Because stroke is a global issue, with over 12.2 million new cases each year, one stroke every 3 seconds. In 2022, over 100 million people were living with stroke-related sequelae, nearly double the number over the past 30 years. [
