Gent

Fans of fantasy, science fiction and pop culture had to wait a year longer, but this weekend they can enjoy themselves again in Flanders Expo in Ghent during sci-fi and fantasy fair FACTS. The participants spared no expense in dressing up as their favorite character.

Johanne Jeloos (30) from Paris: “I spent an hour and a half with my make-up”

With her gigantic lollipop, Johanne immediately catches the eye in the halls of Flanders Expo. Dressed as Jester from Critical Role, a popular web series within the genre, she comes to FACTS for the second time. “I like the uninhibited atmosphere here. Just enthusiasts who live their passion together.” And she had a lot of trouble doing that herself. She worked on her costume for three months. “Getting ready today took several hours. It only took me an hour and a half to apply my make-up, but it was more than worth it. I enjoy every moment.”

Robin Van Hulle (20) from Roeselare: “Worked on my outfit until 3 o’clock tonight”

Proudly poses West Flemish Robin with his pole ax and helmet in his hands. Completely dressed as a knight, he seems to have been catapulted straight from the Middle Ages into the present. “I’m here as the Lawbringer from the video game For Honor. My favorite video game of course (laughs).” Like the really diehard fans, he made his entire outfit himself. “In total I spent three months designing and making everything. I worked on my outfit until three o’clock last night. The result may be there, right? (laughs). Now the main thing is to enjoy the fair and the atmosphere.”

Joke Verhasselt (19) from Lommel: “Used Christmas lights in my outfit”

With her bow and arrow at the ready, the Limburg Joke is taking a breather. Together with a friend, also a fan of cosplay, she is at FACTS for the third time. “We walk around a bit, look at the various stalls with gadgets and soon we will also play some games ourselves.” She proves that Joke is a real lover with her outfit. Dressed as Aloy from the video game Horizon Zero Dawn, she strolls through the hallways. She made her impressive outfit completely herself. “I have been working on this for almost a year. I sewed my clothes together myself and I also made my bow myself. Those lights in my outfit? Christmas lights. You have to be creative if you want to make an outfit.”
