In humans, monkeypox was first diagnosed in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Contrary to what the name suggests, the virus is mainly transmitted by rodents.
The virus is related to the smallpox virus. After an infection, a patient may develop flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache and fatigue. This is followed by a rash on the face and the rest of the body.
Most patients recover within a few weeks, but people in Africa also die from it. This is mainly because access to good medical care is often limited.
