Striking Distance Studios, the developer behind the horror game The Callisto Protocol, confirms that 32 employees have been laid off. The layoffs would “better align the company for the success of current and future projects.”
It is not clear how many employees the company currently has. The American game studio has according to the LinkedIn page 169 employees only on the official website of the company only 139 employees are listed. In any case, the number of employees made redundant is significant given the relatively small team of the American game studio, which also has a branch in Spain.
Parent company Krafton says in a statement against IGN only indicates that 32 employees have been laid off, but not the exact reason for this. The round of layoffs probably has something to do with the limited success of The Callisto Protocol. Start this year came out that Krafton expected the game to sell five million units, but only two million units had been sold at the time. The horror game received mixed reviews after its release at the end of 2022 and was therefore not necessarily well received. Tweakers wrote in its review: “The Callisto Protocol is a nice snack for gamers who miss Dead Space and similar games a lot, but not much more than that.”
The Callisto Protocol is a Dead Space-like horror game from the third-person perspective. The studio Striking Distance Studios was founded for the game and under publisher and parent company Krafton, the game was originally going to be part of the PUBG universe. Later, the game was disconnected from the PUBG game world. Dozens of developers contributed to the game who had previously worked on Dead Space, making the game seen as a spiritual successor to the latter game.
