“Strikes in German airports cause flight cancellations and disruptions”

At Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER), about 70 of the 240 flights were canceled on Monday due to strikes. The airport itself confirms this on its website. At least 30 planes are also grounded at Hamburg airport.

The consequences of the German actions are also felt in Belgium. According to the Brussels Airport spokesperson, a Ryanair outward and return flight has been completely canceled and five Brussels Airlines flights are flying back to Belgium empty. Brussels Airlines does depart with passenger flights to Berlin.

The Verdi trade union called on security officers, as well as baggage and passenger control staff at the capital’s largest airport, to stop working from 4:30 a.m. to midnight. They want to increase the pressure for better working conditions. Verdi asks the employers for, among other things, allowances for unfavorable working hours, for example at the weekend, and a scheme for the payment of overtime.

Because travelers cannot be checked, the airport announced shortly after the announcement that no passenger flights would take off and some landings would also not take place. Aircraft with only goods on board would not be affected.

Also at Hamburg airport, Verdi has announced warning strikes from Monday morning, specifically for employees of Aviation Handling Services Hamburg GmbH AHS, who are responsible, among other things, for check-in and boarding. This morning it was announced that at least 30 of the 160 planned departures will not take place and that number may increase, according to the airport. Arrivals just go as planned.

The German airport association criticized the warning strikes by the service providers. “Again, the airports are the main victims, although they are not involved in the negotiations and are not negotiating parties.”

The actions are part of a long list of strikes that have been organized across Germany in recent weeks, especially in the transport sector. Last week, airline staff went on strike on three different days and on Friday the rail network across the country was shut down for hours.
