On July 13, a crowd of glamorous moviegoers and slightly less glamorous journalists gathered at a London cinema to watch the premiere of ‘Oppenheimer’, the new film from Universal Pictures, munching on popcorn . As audiences waited for the film’s stars – Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and others – to enter, they were greeted with an apology from director Christopher Nolan. He announced that his actors had just returned home. “They left to write their placards to join the picket lines.”
Actors join screenwriters
Said strike, called a few moments earlier by the Screen Actors Guild of America [syndicat des acteurs, ndt] and which joins that of the Writers Guild of America [syndicat des scénaristes, ndt] debuting in May, detonated a bombshell in the American entertainment industry. Its repercussions will extend far beyond: nine of the ten biggest global box office hits last year were produced in the United States, and American streaming services are now present in living rooms around the world. As the stars clash with the studios, the great entertainment producing machine has come to a standstill.
