Strike in NRW: your rights in public transport buses and trains

Verdi calls for a strike in local public transport. Passengers are not entitled to carriage or reimbursement.

The essentials in brief:

  • Verdi has announced strikes in the public sector, including on buses and trains, in NRW for Thursday and Friday.
  • The local trains and S-Bahn trains of Deutsche Bahn and other private companies are not affected.
  • Anyone who is unable to use public transport due to the strike has no right to transport or a refund of the fare.

As part of the ongoing collective bargaining in the public sector, local transport in parts of North Rhine-Westphalia may be severely restricted on February 9th and 10th. Among other things, there should be a strike here:

  • DSW21 on February 9th in Dortmund, Castrop-Rauxel and Lünen,
  • Rheinbahn on February 9th and 10th in Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Krefeld, Meerbusch, Neuss and in the district of Mettmann,
  • WSW on February 9th and 10th in Wuppertal,
  • Stadtwerke Solingen GmbH transport company on February 9th and 10th,
  • Stadtwerke Verkehrsbetriebe Remscheid on February 9th and 10th.

Trains operated by Deutsche Bahn and other private transport companies such as Abellio, National Express, Eurobahn, Westfalenbahn and NordWestBahn are not affected. Local trains such as the Regional Express and the S-Bahn are running.

Mobility guarantee does not apply

Die Mobility guarantee NRW is a voluntary service provided by the transport company in North Rhine-Westphalia. Strike is one of the proposed grounds for exclusion. The same also applies to the punctuality guarantee of some transport companies in NRW.

Expenses will not be reimbursed

Those affected will not be reimbursed for taxi costs. Because in the event of a walkout, neither the “NRW Mobility Guarantee” nor other guarantees from the transport company will apply. The terms of these guarantees exclude the right to a refund in the event of a strike. A refund could possibly be made as a gesture of goodwill.

punctuality at work

Employees should note that the way to work is basically their own responsibility. Anyone who does not reach their workplace on time is obliged to make up for the entire working time or to take vacation or compensation for this time. Working from home could also be an alternative.
