Hundreds of arriving and departing flights were canceled in Portugal this weekend due to a strike by employees of the baggage handling company Groundforce, AFP reported.
The reason for the protest is the delay in salaries.
“The strike on ground services at Groundfors has seriously affected the functioning of Portuguese airports and especially the airport in Lisbon,” a spokesman for the airport operator ANA told AFP.
Yesterday, 277 flights were canceled, and today – at least 345.
The most affected is the airport in Lisbon, the hub of the national airline Portuguese Airlines (TAP Air), which was forced to cancel nearly 550 flights.
Groundforce officials decided to stage a 48-hour strike to protest the “unbearable situation of instability” in the company, which is in serious financial difficulties.
