The new law stipulates, among other things, that parents who buy alcoholic beverages for their children under eighteen in the pub or restaurant are punishable. Friends who are already eighteen years old and who do so risk a fine. In addition, price stunts in shops may not exceed 25 percent of the price and there will be more control over the age limit when buying alcohol online and when it is delivered to your home.
The stricter rules stem from the national prevention agreement that Blokhuis previously concluded with more than seventy organizations. The aim is to reduce obesity, drinking and smoking. With regard to drinking, especially young people under the age of eighteen and pregnant women should be protected from drinking. Alcohol is harmful to the brain development of young people and the unborn child. Excessive alcohol consumption must also be reduced.
According to Blokhuis, research shows that a third of young people who drink alcohol get it from their parents or carers. This cannot be punishable behind the front door, but there is supervision in the catering industry. Blokhuis also wants to achieve with the rule that the elderly become more aware that they do not give children drink.
