Stricter entry rules for travelers from outside the Schengen zone from Wednesday

EU citizens can travel freely in the Schengen zone. European countries not covered are Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Croatia and Romania. Countries such as Iceland, Norway and Switzerland do not belong to the EU, but do fall under the Schengen Agreement.

A quarantine obligation applies to unvaccinated travelers from certain countries, such as the United Kingdom. De Jonge wants this to also apply to vaccinated people.

At the beginning of December, the RIVM advised tightening up the travel rules, for example a mandatory test on arrival in the Netherlands. The cabinet wants to amend the law to make this possible. At the time, the cabinet did not want to adopt other advice, such as a double obligation to test for vaccinated travelers. First, De Jonge wanted to consult with his European colleagues.

According to De Jonge, it is also “conceivable” that a negative test result will be added to the European digital corona certificate (dcc) for everyone. “We are not going to do that alone as the Netherlands.” In the coming weeks, there will be consultations in the EU about this “to come to an agreement.”

As far as he is concerned, the Dutch can go on holiday. “The most important thing is: stick to the rules.”
