Stricter corona measures in Groningen effective from today

Groningen – In the province of Groningen, stricter corona measures will be in force from tonight, Sunday 27 September, 6 p.m. The measures were announced by Prime Minister Mark Rutte last Friday.

Rutte announced in a press conference that eight regions, including Groningen, will be labeled ‘worrisome’. This means that from 6 p.m. on Sunday there is a closing time for the catering industry. Pubs and cafes are not allowed to let new customers in from midnight. The hall lighting must also be on from this time and the music must be switched off.

Everyone must have left the establishments by 1 a.m. Furthermore, no more meetings may be held for more than fifty people. Larger meetings must be notified in advance. Exceptions are occasions where there is flow-through, such as shops, catering establishments and religious gatherings.

Mayor Koen Schuiling of the municipality of Groningen, and also chairman of the security region, announced in a subsequent press conference on Friday that no additional regional measures will be taken on top of these rules.

He did, however, urge residents to adhere to the basic rules with which the spread of the corona virus must be stopped. The number of infections in the security region has risen sharply in recent weeks. Especially in the municipality of Groningen the numbers are increasing considerably.
