Strict Security Measures in Place for Cochin Carnival New Year’s Eve Celebrations

Fort Kochi – Authorities have taken strict measures to avoid crowding during New Year’s Eve celebrations in Cochin Carnival. More than a thousand policemen under the leadership of 10 Assistant Commissioners of Police and 25 Inspectors will be on duty to maintain law and order. When the 40,000-seat parade ground is full, entry will be restricted. Barricades will be placed at various points on the roads to control the crowd.

In case of untoward incidents, 2 roads will be evacuated without loading people and vehicles for ambulance use. Sub-Collector K. Meera, Mayor M. Anilkumar, Hibi Eden MP, K. J. Maxi MLA and Assistant Commissioner of Police K. R. Manoj informed that a detailed disaster management plan has been prepared in relation to security arrangements.

Traffic control
∙ Only till 4 pm on 31st, vehicles will be transported from Vypin to Fort Kochi via Ro-Ro Jangar. People will be allowed to pass through Jangar till 7 pm. Jankar service will not run after 7. If required after 12 midnight, Ro-Ro Junkar service will be run to Vip. There will be no boat service to Fort Kochi after 7 pm.
∙ Vehicles will not be allowed to enter Fort Kochi by road after 4 pm. Vehicles will be blocked at Sift Junction, BOT Palam, Kannangat, Edakochi, Kumbalangi Pazhangad and Kandakadav even before 4 am due to heavy traffic.
∙ Buses coming to Fort Kochi from places like Ernakulam, Edakochi, Toppumpadi etc. will end the service at Cochin College ground once Fort Kochi gets crowded. People can reach here and continue their journey by buses.
∙ Fort Kochi Aspinwall Cabral Ground, Aspinwall Ground, St. Paul’s School Ground, Delta School Ground etc. 26 parking grounds have been set up. Depending on the capacity of the parking grounds at Fort Kochi, the route will be diverted to the grounds at other locations.
∙ Private and KSRTC buses will be plying for people to go back after 12 midnight.

To control the crowd
∙ The iron fences in the rest of the parade ground will be strengthened by opening up as many avenues as possible.
∙ 2 watch towers will be installed on the parade ground.
∙ Steps will be taken to prevent power outage.
∙ Adequate CCTV cameras will be installed.
∙ Special facilities will be provided for foreigners in the field.
∙ Adequate lighting shall be ensured everywhere.
∙ Barricades will be placed outside the parade ground to control the crowd.
∙ Barricades will also be placed and control will be imposed at Kamalkadu.
∙ Barricades will be removed before 12 midnight and restrictions will be removed.
∙ Female policemen will be assigned to Mufti.
∙ Full time boat patrol by Coastal Police.
∙ Check from morning to catch drunk drivers and criminals.

Ambulance route
∙ Parade Ground – Chariot Junction – Taluk Hospital – Kalvati Bazar Road – Thoppumpadi.
∙ Parade Ground – Curo Street – Taluk Hospital – New Road – Bazar Road – Thoppumpadi

Temporary hospital
∙ Provision of a temporary hospital system in the Prison of Freedom Struggle building near the parade ground.
∙ The services of doctors will be ensured from 2 pm till the end of the carnival.
∙ The services of doctors will be ensured round the clock in taluk hospital and private hospitals.
∙ Drinking water and toilet facilities will be provided.

New Year’s Eve from 8.30 pm onwards
Marathon under the leadership of Citizen for Fort Kochi tomorrow at 6 am as part of Fort Kochi Cochin Carnival. At 8.30 pm, the New Year’s Eve celebrations will begin at the parade ground. The musical program will continue till 1 am. On 12th burning of papanji. The carnival procession will start from the Veli Maidani on January 1 at 4 PM and conclude at the Parade Maidani. Closing ceremony at 7, dance program at 7.30.

Other New Year’s Eve events to be attended: Mayor
Fort Kochi: Mayor M. Anilkumar has requested that everyone should not only go to Fort Kochi to participate in the Cochin Carnival celebration but also participate in other New Year celebrations in the city. The Municipal Corporation has taken the initiative to organize Palluruthi Carnival and various art programs at Ernakulamappan ground. Pushpa Mela at Marine Drive and National Saras Mela at Kalur are also going on. There are also various art programs here,
