Suara.com – To lose weight, many people choose to do strict diet or severely restrict intake calories food. A strict diet may help you slim down, but it can be detrimental to your health by affecting your immune.
An Iranian study published in the American Journal of Translational Research aimed to evaluate whether significant calorie restriction would affect the immune system.
In the study, a team of nutrition and public health specialists collected 29 overweight female participants, with a body mass index greater than 30 kg/m² (which is the American Heart Association’s benchmark for obesity).
Reported from Eat This, here the researchers divided 29 women into two groups. The experimental group underwent treatment to lose weight, in addition to a diet that asked them to consume 600 calories less per day than their standard calorie requirement.

On the other hand, other groups of participants can eat freely. Both at the start of the experiment and after the experimental group lost 10% of their body weight.
The results show that aggressive dietary restrictions may make some dieters more susceptible to disease.
Here the researchers measured the number of lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell that supports immune function) in each participant.
They stated that for women who underwent calorie restriction and medication to lose 10% of their body weight, they found “natural killer cells” (cells that are key to the immune system) decreased.
Meanwhile, for the control group that ate freely, the researchers reported that no significant changes were observed in the measured immune markers.

From their findings, the researchers concluded that caloric restriction-induced weight loss may independently weaken antiviral immune defenses. However they note that further clinical trials in the subject are needed.
Even so, the results of this study should not discourage you from losing weight to be healthier.
