Strict catering rules at garden parties only ‘extremely strong a …

In the ministerial decree on the relaxation on June 9, compliance with stricter catering rules is not mandatory for garden parties.

Flemish Prime Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA) had already announced it, but now it is also officially included in the draft ministerial decree that Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden (CD&V) elaborated: it will also be at home in the garden from 9 June. it is possible to organize receptions or banquets for up to fifty people, provided that they take place outside and end no later than 11.30 pm.

Remarkable: if the catering industry organizes such parties, it must adhere to strict rules, such as table service. In the case of the home parties, Verlinden only indicates that ‘compliance with the rules of the catering industry is extremely strictly recommended’. In general, the ministerial decree does indicate that groups of four must be formed for permitted gatherings ‘unless this is impossible due to the nature of the activity’.

Alcohol ban scrapped

The ministerial decree contains a few more striking details. Today, between midnight and 5 a.m., a grouping ban of more than three people, excluding children up to and including 12 years old, applies on the public road and in public spaces. From 9 June, this will be a ban on gathering more than four people. That also seems easier to check by the police, because from 9 June the outdoor terraces of the catering industry may remain open until 11.30 p.m. and terraces can still accommodate a maximum of four. The indoor catering is allowed until 10 pm. A maximum of four people per table is also allowed indoors and an air quality meter is mandatory.

In addition, the general ban on the sale of alcoholic drinks will be lifted between 10 pm and 5 am. Takeaway meals and drinks can still be delivered until 11.30pm at the latest. It is also striking that Verlinden explicitly states that European Championship screens can be admitted outside, and that for a maximum of 400 people. The new rules could still change slightly after advice from the Council of State.
