The new president of the provincial CONI committee will be elected on Saturday. The only candidate is Alex Tabarelli. The interview.
Daily newspaper: Mr Tabarelli, you are the only candidate for the office of CONI President. Why did you decide to do this?
Alex Tabarelli de Fatis: I’ve been Vice-President for four years. The previous President Heinz Gutweniger is no longer allowed to run for office after 27 years, so it was actually a logical step. Personally, I think it’s a shame that there are no other candidates. However, I am not yet President and therefore do not speak as such. We have set up a group in which there are many who share the same concerns. We hope to work well with this group and to build up a lot in these four years.
What are your main goals if you are elected president on Saturday?
A very important project for us will definitely be the 2026 Olympics. The second major goal is to strengthen the status of sport and especially that of the professional sports associations. We have to act in a more coordinated manner and exert a greater influence on society and politics. Because in this way we can also solve the problems that are now occurring in the Corona crisis, for example. It is also important that CONI itself is upgraded as an institution, because it is the highest sports body in the country. It should get the status that it enjoys in the rest of Italy. We will therefore have to do more for the cooperation between the professional sports associations, but also put more into communication. Because in the end every athlete who comes from South Tyrol has come from the CONI or the respective professional sports association. There is no other umbrella organization in South Tyrol that brings out athletes.
So CONI should become a kind of mouthpiece for sport in South Tyrol?
Yes, together with the other sports organizations. We are responsible for competitive sports, for example, but there are also recreational sports, school sports and many others. CONI is certainly one of the main players, but all the others are just as important, especially now that a lot is in place.
