Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese Vice Premier Tran Hong Ha stressed the need to strengthen cooperation on vaccines and biopharmaceuticals to proactively prevent and control diseases, hosting AstraZeneca Vietnam Chairman and CEO Nitin Kapoor in Hanoi today. .
The Subhead thanked AstraZeneca for its valuable and timely support to Vietnam in the fight against COVID-19.
He expressed his impression of AstraZeneca’s ongoing collaborative activities in Vietnam, particularly in the fields of vaccines and biopharmaceuticals, saying that this plays a crucial role in proactively preparing for potential disease outbreaks in the future.
Vietnam supports AstraZeneca’s commitments to reduce emissions and move towards carbon neutrality in all its activities, Hong Ha said, stressing that the experience in preventing and controlling COVID-19 showed that the world can only roll back and end the pandemic if all countries have equal access to vaccines.
Similarly, the goals related to addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions cannot be achieved if there are countries that remain “on the sidelines” of these efforts, he said.
He highlighted the close relationship between human health and the “health” of the environment, stating that restoring and protecting the natural environment is a crucial solution to prevent and reduce the burden of disease-related costs on individuals and society due to to water, air and waste pollution.
The technology is a “vaccine” to tackle climate change, Ha noted, adding that developing countries like Vietnam need a lot of support and access to various solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Companies with strong research and development capabilities like AstraZeneca play a crucial role in achieving climate change goals, such as reducing emissions to net zero and participating in the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) by joining projects to research and transfer green fuel production technologies, and develop smart transmission systems and large-scale energy storage devices, he said.
Mentioning AstraZeneca’s project to plant 22.5 million trees, the Deputy Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to work closely with AstraZeneca to carry out the project effectively.
He expressed his hope that AstraZeneca would participate in projects related to the Net Zero Roadmap and JETP in Vietnam, which serve as experimental and pilot initiatives for global mechanisms.

AstraZeneca is collaborating with Vietnamese agencies and partners to implement a $50 million reforestation and landscape restoration project, which aims to plant 22.5 million trees on 30,500 ha, thereby creating the conditions for development of biodiversity and providing sustainable livelihoods for more than 17,000 households, Kapoor said.
He expressed his hope that the project will serve as a pilot initiative in the National Steering Committee’s action plan to implement Vietnam’s commitments at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), so encourages other organizations and companies to take joint measures to respond to this phenomenon of global impact./.
